Malawi’s stand in leader to the UN Conference on Climate Change in Warsaw, Poland, Aloysius Kamperewera, has challenged the delegation to participate fully in the negotiations and bring tangible benefits to Malawians.

Briefing the delegates recently, Kamperewera said government hopes to gain a lot from the negotiations through multilateral and bilateral meetings with donor partners and other countries.

“Sometimes, we attend meetings for the sake of it and there is no implementation of ideas learnt. Whatever we learn should be something that will benefit Malawi,” said Kamperewera.

The Malawi delegation is this week led by Minister of Environment and Climate Change Management Halima Daud.

She is due to attend high-level segment sessions commonly attended by Heads of State and Government, heads of delegation and senior government officials from November 20 to 22.

The UN Secretary-General in most cases presides over the official opening and closing ceremonies of the CoP.

Daud is expected to outline the position which is aligned to the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

Malawi is the lead coordinator for the LDCs and Africa in areas of finance, adaptation, agriculture and mitigation discussions.
